Mansfield Christmas Lights Switch On 2009

Mansfield reaches for the stars!

THE rain came pouring down right on cue . . . but Mansfield didn't get the hump!
Instead, thousands still flocked to Mansfield Market Place, reached for the stars and watched in delight as pop stars S Club, Father Christmas and panto stars turned on the town’s festive lights.

Thursday’s switch-on event had begun with three camels joining in a parade, which saw Father Christmas emerge from a genie's lamp to delight the youngsters.
The lamp was part of the entertainment involving stars from this winter’s panto at the Palace Theatre, Aladdin.
And the panto characters, children’s favourite Barney the Dinosaur and then S Club all took to the stage to entertain the crowds braving the wet weather.
A giant TV screen made sure that no-one missed any of the fun on the main stage, led by the 103.2 and Chad roadshow — and the snow came down, as well as the torrential rain, to add a festive flavour.

S Club — now three members of the original S Club 7 chart-toppers, Jo O'Meara, Paul Cattermole and Bradley McIntosh — got youngsters dancing in the rain as they ran through some of their hits . . . the party atmosphere made sure that people ‘didn’t stop moving’, but instead enjoyed the launch of the Christmas season.
Also joining in the fun were stilt walkers, Stags footballers and the Brunts School choir, while after the big switch-on of the lights, a fireworks finale lit up the town centre sky. Mansfield Christmas Lights Committee chairman Bill Taylor added to the festive fun by dishing out free Santa hats, together with his helpers.
The event, which also saw Mansfield Rotary Club fundraising, marked the first late-night shopping evening of the festive season. Stores will now be open late every Thursday up to Christmas, when there will also be activities for shoppers inside the Four Seasons Centre.

Each year Mansfield District Council has a budget of £50,000 for the Christmas lights, including the cost of erecting, maintaining and repairing them.
This is supported by the Mansfield Christmas Lights Committee — including Mans-field District Council, Mansfield Town Centre Partnership, Four Seasons Shopping Centre, Mansfield 103.2 and Chad — which raises funds to purchase lights and sponsor the switch-on.

Lisa Vincent, town centre events and promotions co-ordinator, said: “This year was fantastic. Although the weather let us down, the people of Mansfield didn’t. It was amazing to see so many people brave the weather to support the Christmas lights and enjoy the entertainment.”

Mansfield Mayor Tony Egginton, who launched the event, added: “I hope our spectacular display will encourage residents and visitors to Mansfield to make their seasonal purchases in the town centre.”
“I would like to send my heartfelt thanks to the Mansfield Christmas Lights committee, to our sponsors and to Mansfield District Council staff.”
for making the whole thing such a success.”

Mansfield Eco Bag

ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY Mansfield folk have been going green over the summer thanks to the town’s first eco-bag.
The ‘shopping bag for life’ was launched in May as an alternative to plastic bags and has been selling well over the past four months.
Now shoppers are reminded that the cotton bags, featuring the unique ‘Going Green’ design from Mansfield schoolgirl Holly Shaw, are still on sale throughout the town.
The bags cost £1 each and are sold on a not-for-profit basis, with Mansfield District Council subsidising the full production costs.
The council — together with Mansfield Town Centre Partnership — has produced the bag as an alternative to the plastic bags damaging the environment.
The eco bags are available from Mansfield Old Town Hall, the Civic Centre, the Four Seasons Shopping Centre and Chad receptions.
